I’m constantly reminded of the movie Vacation when my family goes on vacation. Although we didn’t visit Wally World (aka Disneyland or Six Flags) typically certain events remind us of the fiasco that the Griswalds underwent on the movie.

Morning from the east

Our vacation consisted of a trip to Ruedi Reservoir, near Basalt, Colorado, for fishing and outdoor fun. For the most part everything went smoothly. The closest experience we had to the Griswalds was getting snagged on the rocks trying for some larger fish. I am aware of this problem from my youth while fishing at Ruedi, however, I was determined to catch something larger than 11 inches (to no avail). After losing six or seven rigs, I abandoned the bottom and opted for a bubble on the top. Our success was much higher as we bagged seven seven small rainbows.

The biggest success was watching my family enjoy the event. My wife caught fish for the first time in her life. Our oldest son learned to bait, cast and reel with almost no help and continued his success by bagging three fish. Our youngest son shared by helping dad reel in a couple fish and gained his first genuine experience of angling. Our daughter and youngest child helped reel one in and enjoyed holding the little creatures for some great photos.

My grandparents planned a trip to Ruedi almost every summer with their children and families. God rest my grandfather’s soul, he passed nearly 13 years ago. My family now enjoys time at Ruedi when time permits. When I was younger we stayed at the reservoir in an RV or tent. We stayed in a cabin up the road about three miles from the inlet.

Next summer we may not make it up to Ruedi, we’d like to go to the beach. It won’t matter much because home goes with us whenever we are all together.
