Design Competition

March 3, 2010 Leave a comment

When I began this blog site I intended full well to keep it up to date with my work and family. Needless to say that hasn’t happened, and I’m not going to promise it will get any better. However, I recently entered a competition for a Website design and I wanted to share the results.

I entered a Website called 99designs.com where designers gather to try and earn extra cash, build their skills and help some interesting causes. I found the site through a promotion run by sitepoint.com a while back and only recently created an account to participate in contests. I’m fascinated by my interest in this particular contest because it seems very random. I went to the site a couple weeks back and without hesitation jumped right into this particular competition.

Echo Website Design Composition

The premise of the work is to design a site for a media commenting service named Echo. Journalists put up their articles/stories and watch as readers comment in real-time. The system is capable of updating multiple social media outlets at once. Typically, social media is not exciting to me. In fact, this is the most social I get online. I recognize the potential value offered by social media but I harbor bad feelings because I see people losing touch with reality in the digital world.

I started down the path of reading the design brief and gathering material and ideas. I worked on the design for ten to twelve hours late at night over the course of a week. I completed my design, which admittedly lacked the real flare I was after. I submitted the design and they gave me one star out of five for my effort. I’d love to hear what you have to say about my design and this link will take you to the competition for a look at the other designs.
